Another busy day in the garden. We have 6 compost bins and a couple of them are not working very well, so we decided to empty them.
When we moved to The Drock we started to add our kitchen waste to the bins already in use but I found rats so we bought a Johanna which we had in the last house. It is an enclosed bin that we compost all kitchen waste, including cooked food, bones, meat and fish. The two that we emptied today had not been emptied for years, they were bone dry at the bottom and not much else had been going on. There were no worms or mini beasts that you would expect to find in a good compost bin. So we have emptied them, the compost that is good I will dig into the new bed that I am currently digging. The soil is quite loamy and sandy so the compost will be a good addition. I will start adding stuff back into the compost bins but spread it evenly with kitchen compost waste (peelings only), grass cuttings, cardboard and then add the bits of old compost hasn't composted over the years from the two we just emptied. Shouldn't take too long to break down then. I have made a start! Emptying the border, clearing the roots of the plants, clearing all the ground elder roots and them planting it back.... This may take a while. |
