(hemp agrimony). Growing amongst the ferms on the bank down to the patio. it flowers later in the summer and can reach heights of upto 6ft with vanilla-scented leaves
Starting from left to right I have planted out Sambucus nigra black beauty:Purple Elder and there is also an established Elder that I have cut right back. I wanted to plant the Elder as there are so many things you can do with Elderflowers and Elderberries, not to miss out the fact that you may make fabulous whistle from the elder stems. Carex pendular (Sedge) which I have growing in abundance, I have cut them right back, pulled out all the old leaves. There is Campanula blue waterfall, Tradescantia little doll, Ajuga atropurpurea, another little doll Tradescantia then Ajuga, Tradescantia innocence 'spiderwort' and then my favourite Ligularia midnight lady, which I am hoping the slugs don't eat. At the back I have also planted Marshmallow that a friend has given me and some Lilies but I am not sure which ones til they flower. I have put in an edging but this is a temporary measure as I will eventually be putting in a pathway, with mixed pavers and cobbles.
It's great to see how well the gunnera is doing, this photo doesn't really do it justice. Its about 4ft high now and I have planted a few ferns around it. I'm just excited to see how big it's going to grow. I would like to put a ligularia next to it, so that will be my next purchase from the garden centre. I have never been successful growing ligularia as the slugs usually get it first The sweet peas are flowering and I have been picking them regularly, They smell so good in the house and they really do add a splash of colour. These ones are growing by the greenhouse and are doing really well. The ones I have planted around the allotment area are still very small, hopefully they will flower before the weather turns.
The Rowen tree was calling out for a circular bed, so with string and a marker I went to work. I began by removing the grass turf, which I have laid under the hedge upside down so it will eventually rot down.
Rue came to help, along with her ball. Once the soil had been dug over and roots removed, it was time to plant. I started about 8am this morning and have planted it out very symmetrically with Hollyhocks in the centre, the bed has then been divided into 1/4 with Lupins and filled in with Love Lies Bleeding, and to finish it all off I have planted white lobelia around the edge. God knows what it's going to look like! But if it is horrendous I can always start again next year. |
